I forgot to mention in this post that there are many authors that do not like the return policy so they turn this off. This is because if a bookstore doesn’t sell your book, the return fees can be quite significant. Some people choose to do a trial and only have the bookstore do a small amount so they don’t end up eating the cost of those returns.
I start my books on KDP and when I'm fairly confident all the kinks are worked out (all the little updates), I also list them on D2D. Unlike KDP's Kindle Create, D2D's formatting will automatically take care of windows and orphans at the end of chapters. They also have nice chapter decorations and let you download PDFs and ePUB files to take elsewhere.
I’ve been reading on a forum about ebooks. Lots of complaints about drop caps, terrible spacing, etc. It took me down a rabbit trail! One guy suggested creating your book in HTML and I was like “wow did I step back into the year 2000?” I think tools like calibre and even D2D have come such a long way.
Could one start printing with Amazon, like say during the first 90 days while participating in KDP select, then add the D2D printing option later when going wide?
You could - but you'd need to buy an ISBN so you can move it from platform to platform because Amazon and D2D do not allow you to sell your book with their ISBN's on other platforms. I was actually thinking about this the other day because I like the idea of having D2D offer it to more places. However, it's not going to make as much money. So I think I'm going to leave it on Amazon and then do the ebook on D2D. I guess it depends if you are going to place it in bookstores (which are becoming harder to do but not impossible).
You can sell print books on D2D even if your ebook is on Kindle unlimited. Kindle unlimited only makes the ebook exclusive to Amazon. D2D also offers free ISBNs that can be used through all of its distribution channels. You'd just have different ISBNs between your Amazon books and D2D book. I've done this and I didn't have any problems.
Amazon KDP doesn't use an ISBN, correct? So on D2D they'd assign it an isbn. I also think you can unselect Amazon so you don't publish it there through D2D. I'm still getting the hang of the platform too....so my apologies if that was unclear.
I should add that D2D only allows one free change to a print version per 90 day period and for that reason I always start my books on KDP for at least the first month in case I need to make changes.
